Measures for Chemical Substances Contained in Products

Management of Chemical Substances Contained in Products

In recent years, there has been a global expansion of regulations of contained chemical substances, and we, Fuji Electric Power Semiconductors group, have also established our own standards to "minimize significant harmful effects on human health and the environment", while also working to manage the chemical substances contained in our products.

Compliance with the European RoHS Directive

Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 8, 2011 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment
The European RoHS Directive lays down rules on the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) with a view to contributing to the protection of human health and the environment, including the environmentally sound recovery and disposal of waste EEE.

The RoHS Directive is reviewed regularly, and the 2015 amendment ((EU) 2015/863) limits the use of the following 10 specified hazardous substances.
[ ] ; maximum concentration values tolerated

  • Cadmium and its compounds [100ppm]

  • Hexavalent chromium and its compounds [1000ppm]

  • Lead and its compounds [1000ppm]

  • Mercury and its compounds [1000ppm]

  • PBBs(Polybrominated biphenyls) [1000ppm]

  • PBDEs(Polybrominated diphenyl ethers) [1000ppm]

  • DEHP(Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) [1000ppm]

  • BBP(Butyl benzyl phthalate) [1000ppm]

  • DBP(Dibutyl phthalate) [1000ppm]

  • DIBP(Diisobutyl phthalate) [1000ppm]

In addition, an exemption is permitted with regards to the above mentioned regulated substances if substitution is not possible from the scientific and technical point of view.

Examples of exceptions applicable to our power semiconductors

  1. 1.

Copper alloy containing lead up to 4wt%

  2. 2.

Lead contained in high-melting point solders (lead-based alloys containing lead in excess of 85% by weight)

  3. 3.

Lead contained in the glass components of electronic parts

Revisions such as additions and reviews of each of the above restricted substances and exceptions is scheduled in the future, and our company is fully willing to comply as necessary.

In order to correctly understand the RoHS Directive and its exceptions, please refer to the latest version of the RoHS Directive.

Compliance of Fuji Electric Power Semiconductors to the European RoHS Directive

We have developed various RoHS compliant products and fulfilled in most of product lineups while some portion of products still remain as non-RoHS compliant.
Refer to the information below regarding identification of RoHS compliance.

  • IGBT Modules (excepting automotive specified model types)
When the last two digits after the hyphen in the product type name are between "50" and "99", the product is RoHS compliant.
When the last two digits after the hyphen are blank or between "01" and "49", the product is not RoHS compliant.
    [Example]

    • 2MBI300UD-120-52; RoHS compliant

    • 2MBI300UD-120-02; RoHS non-compliant

  • Power Supply Control IC, Power MOSFET, Rectifier Diodes
Products that are currently available for mass production shipping are RoHS compliant.

  • High-performance MOSFET for Automobiles, IPS for Automobiles
RoHS compliant products have the leftmost two digits underlined for the five-digit lot number marked on the product.
    [Example]

 ・47001;RoHS compliant

 ・47001;RoHS non-compliant

  • IGBT IPM for EV/HEV, IGBT Modules for EV/HEV
Products that are currently available for mass production shipping are RoHS compliant.

To find out whether products not listed above are RoHS compliant, please contact a representative at our company or one of our dealers.

Compliance to the European REACH Regulation

Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of December 18, 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)

The European REACH Regulation is a "law for the high-level protection of human health and the environment, while enhancing competition and innovation and ensuring the free movement of substances, which are contained in mixtures and articles, with the intent of achieving a production and use of chemical substances that minimize significant hazardous effects on human health and the environment".
This regulation stipulates substances that are prohibited from being used for specific purposes (restricted substances) and substances that only be used for approved purposes (substances subject to authorisation), etc. In addition, information transmission is required via supply chains with regards to specific chemical substances in articles.
In particular, substances of very high concern (SVHC) are subject to regulation when they are contained in articles with a concentration of more than 0.1% by weight.

RoHS compliant products of Fuji Electric Power Semiconductors are basically compliant with REACH and are properly compliant with restricted substances and substances subject to authorisation.
And with regard to SVHC, we are collecting and confirming each piece of information we receive from suppliers for the materials and parts we use, and based on this, we carry out the development of individual products.

For more information regarding Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) used in our power semiconductors, please contact a representative at our company or one of our dealers.
