An FR3® Transformer at Keio Corporation’s Fuchu Substation

Contributing to environmentally conscious railway operation with a transformer using natural ester oil

The Keio Line in Tokyo connects Shinjuku and Hachioji.
Operated by Keio Corporation, it is an important transportation infrastructure that not only carries children to and from school but also contributes to the revitalization of communities along the line and the promotion of leisure facilities. The Fuchu Substation is responsible for safely converting electricity received from the electric power system into voltage that can be used for railcar drive equipment and lighting to support the stable operation of the company’s railways.
The Keio Group, with Keio Corporation (our customer) at the center, aims to contribute to the achievement of a sustainable society through environmentally friendly business activities based on the concept of environmental friendliness in its group philosophy. As a part of these efforts, in October 2024, they installed FE’s FR3® Fluid-applied transformer (FR3® transformer) at the Fuchu Substation.

Transformers installed in power plants and substations require insulation to stop electric current from entering unintended parts of the equipment and they also require cooling of heat caused by power loss. Traditionally, mineral oil was used for this purpose, but leaks caused by aging or breakage of transformers can pollute soil and groundwater. That is where the FR3® transformer comes in. Instead of mineral oil, it uses natural ester oil (FR3® Fluid) derived from soybean oil, which minimizes soil contamination in the event of a leak.
“The customer had never used an FR3® transformer before,” says sales representative Genki Yoshimitsu, “but we took the time to demonstrate the benefits of using this transformer.”
One of the decisive factors in our receiving the order was that we had already built a relationship of trust by delivering high-quality substation equipment.
The customer was pleased with our performance, commenting, “After receiving the FR3® transformer, we are truly looking forward to more environmentally friendly Fuji Electric products.”
On his future ambitions, Yoshimitsu says, “This was the first time we delivered an FR3® transformer for the railway industry, but we will continue to do what we can to meet our customer’s requests and contribute to environmentally friendly railway operations.”
