Technical Trends of Measuring Instruments and Control Systems

This paper gives an outline of recent social technical trends of measuring instrumentation and control technology, and Fuji Electric's techniques now and in future. It describes measuring technology utilizing high technology: pressure transmitters, ultrasonic flowmeters, optical thickness gauges, various analyzing instruments, radio isotope measuring instruments, and video sensors, control technology: new distributed digital control systems, personal controllers, and further, Fuji Electric's optical field instrumentation system, FFI, advanced control technology and AI technology.
Distibuted Control System MICREX/System Configuration

Fuji Electric released the distributed control system "MICREX-P" in 1975. Since then, the MICREX-P has been applied to control systems in various industrial fields, deing favorably commented. Recently, Fuji Electric improved the function of the MICREX system to a large extent. Devices in conformity with international standards are used for system configuration. MICREX is distributed control system which can meet a variety of user's needs, utilizing up-to-date technology, such as unified date bases, high-speed date ways. multipurpose networks, effective man-machine interfaces, and so on.
Operator's Stations for Distributed Control System MICREX

CRT operation has become a matter of course together with the development and diffusion of distributed digital control systems. In the meantime, many requirements for "countermeasures against immense quantities of information" and "easy engineering" have been put forward. This paper introduces an outline of a new operator's station developed from the former OCS series to meet those requirements, which includes:
(1) OCS-1500 (to improve a man-machine interface function)
(2) DBS-1500 (to improve a unified control function of process data)
(3) EWS-500 (to improve a process-engineering function)
Process Stations and Data Way for Distributed Control System MICREX

The process station PCS-500 is a new station for process control in the distributed control system. It has excellent features, such as adoption of buses in conformity with the international standard, applicability both to sequence control and to loop control, a reduced installation space, and connection with optical field instrumentation systems. The data way DPCS-F is a newly developed LAN as a data way for distributed control systems, which enables high-speed, large-capacity transmission of 10 Mb/s.
This paper introduces an outline of the system configuration and functions of PCS-500 and DPCS-F.
Fuji Personal Control System FPEC-10

Recently, batch plants with flexibility have been reviewed to respond to various market needs. The control system for such plants has to be flexible, and many users wish to have flexible control systems, which make software development and software maintenance by users themselves possible. Fuji Electric developed a simple and compact control system, FPEC-10, coping with such needs. This paper introduces system construction, features and functions of FREC-10.
Compact Controller S

Compact Controllers S by Fuji Electric is a single loop controller for coming generation, utilizing microcomputer application technology. The controller with excellent price performance is easy to use and accepted in the world-wide market. The controller contains their accommodation capability to various from, of input output signal and to AC and DC power source, they are easily installed PID parameters are adjustable by auto-tuning function. For transmission, they have CC Dataline and RS-422/485 interface, and moreover, transmission by loader interface RS-232-C is also possible by connection from front panel.
New Controller Series Micro Controller

Under such circumstances, Fuji Electric developed more functional Micro Controller with excellent price performance, as new Z series. This paper introduces its design concept, functions and application development.
Fuji Optical Field Instrumentation System, FFI Enlarged Series

FFI system, developed by Fuji Electric, is an up-to-date instrumentation system in the world, adopting the high technology in the optical fiber, low-power microelectronics and sensor fields. FFI system has also realized intelligent field instrumentation and multiplex transmission by optical fibers. The field instruments such as pressure gauges, level meters, thermometers, electromagnetic flowmeters, etc were already reported. This paper describes the feature and performance of the optical actuator, multipoint temperature converter and immersion level meter which were newly developed by us.
Computer System "A-Series" in Industrial Applications

As the industrial structure is altering, it is required that highly integrated information processing technology such as CIM (computer integrated manufacturing) be established urgently. The application of industrial computer, as its nucleus, needs to change from the previous control-intensive one to the opened information-intensive one. In order to cope with the expanding industrial applications, we have developed a new mini-computer system, "A-Series," adopting real time UNIX. This paper introduces its basic concept and features.
AI Systems for Instrumentation and Control

The development and practical use of AI (artificial intelligence) application systems are indispensable for the improvement of automation and advanced control technology in the field op instrumentation and control. This paper introduces the present situation of AI systems for instrumentation and control in line with the AI-systems development, giving an outline of the functions, construction, features and application examples of the AI tools such as FRUITAX, ΦNET, and COMEX; it gives also a brief description of their future development.
Electric (E)-Instrumentation (I)-Compute (C) Unified System

Under the serious economic circumstances such as Yen-rise recession and the like, the dramatic changes of social and industrial structure and being undergone in recent years in Japan.
The expectations for the automation of various industrial fields and requirements for the cost minimizing of these automation systems, are bringing about a strong tendency to unify the Electric (E), Instrumentation (I) and Computers (C), with the progress of microcomputers.
The philosophy of EIC unification and merits of this system, are outlined in this paper, introducing the applications for steel making, continuous casting, cement and incinerator plants in some instances of our supplies.
Application of FFI System to Process Instrumentation

FFI (Fuji Field Instrumentation) system consists of intelligent sensors and optical fiber cable networks with massive data transmission capability, of light weight, and noise-free from electrostatic and electromagnetic interference, e.g. lightning.
Since this system was put on the market in 1985, the supply record of FFI has been continually increasing till now.
The system configuration, application criteria, evaluation results, and some future subjects of FFI system, when applied to large scale systems, are outlined in this paper.
Turbine Control System Utilizing Artificial Intelligence

To ensure the efficient operation of co-generation power plant supplying the factory steam and power, it has ever been considered absolutely to need skillful operators for fine adjusting the generating steam and power to these ever-changing demands in connection with purchasing power.
Meanwhile, the progress of AI technology has made it possible to realize the process control expert system configured in computer program for the optimum automatic operation of the station, in place of trained operators.
The features and performance of the system are outlined in this paper, introducing the case of Tohoku Oil Co., an excellent example of high efficiency and labor saving.
Instrumentation and Control System for Continuous Steel Manufacturing Process Lines

Process lines, such as continuous anealing, picking and heat treatment equipment, require a high level technology for instrumentation because the stand on the final processing stages and may influence product quality. This article describes the system configuration of the distributed digital instrumentation system "MICREX" including its operation, supervising and control functions giving an example of such system applied to steel manufacturing process lines. A case using an induction heating equipment is particularly detailed concerning steel plate temperature control which common and essential to any continuous process lines.
CRT Operation with Telemeter and Telecontrol Equipment

The remote supervisory control system with telemeter and telecontrol equipment, utilized to make local plant unmanned, has changed from switches and almps to CRT display in its main operation method, Responding to such a tendency, Fuji Electric standardized the operation system with CRT, which can be applied to various local plants. This paper introduces an outline of the operation system, taking the system with relatively large scale of telemeter telecontrol equipment as an example.
Large-Scale Building Management System

Fuji electric has built up Large-scale building management system called FECS-500, and thus has completed FFCS series together with small and medium management systems FFCS-100 and 200, both previously prepared, FECS-500 consists of a super microcomputer "FASMIC G", a programmable controller system but realizes higher and more complex functions (such as group control, tenant management, and parking lot control functions). Besides, this system is considered to be a strong tool for controlling so-called intelligent buildings. It is now in operation as a management system for East 3A Building in Tokyo Factory of Fuji Electric.
Decentralized Digital Burner Control System for Thermal Power Stations

Control equipment in thermal power stations is now rapidly developing toward forther advanced and totally digitalized one under the DDS (Daily Start Stop) operation. A new decentralized digital burner control system utilizing the latest programmable controller "MICREX-F500"has been completed by Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.: the latter is a manufacturer of boilers and heavy machines. This system is an advanced sequencial control equipment for the boiler, automatically firing ON/OFF the burner responding to boiler load. As this system has a combustion control function for power stations, it provides special features of higher reliability and better maintainability.
