Innovative Information and Control Systems for Industry (Trends and Prospects)
Yasunori Tsuchiya, Yoshinori Inoue
This paper reviews the trend of information technology (IT) application to the manufacturing industry and the IT application to process instrument systems. In the material industry, the concurrent advance of IT applications to the planning system for the whole supply chain and the execution systems, i.e. the manufacturing execution system and monitor/control system, is desired. Many of domestic process automation systems are reaching the stage of renewal, and to increase competitive power, the renewal of execution systems using open information control systems is hoped for. Related advanced supervision and control systems, fieldbuses, engineering tools, plant maintenance, environmental information systems are also reviewed.

Evolving Advanced Open Process Automation System
Koichi Mori
Fuji Electric developed the advanced open process automation system MICREX-AX based on the concept of evolution and inheritance. The inheritance means inheriting the property of distributed control systems already used by customers and maintaining reliability and high-speed response. The evolution means developing open systems and offering solutions to various customer requirements. This paper describes the evolution under the key words of distribution and flattening of functions and information-technology-integrated process automation systems and fusion and opening of information and control.

Distributed Control Systems Inheriting Customer Property
Toshiyuki Sasaya
The advanced open process automation system MICREX-AX was developed with the concept of evolution and inheritance. It maintains users own property while evolving toward open systems. It is a big problem for users to effectively inherit their property, and the system AX can meet this requirement. This paper describes the inheritance of property, quoting examples of methods to renew a system while the system is effectively operated and maintained.

Optical Fieldbus Systems in Accordance with the International Standard
Masuyuki Kobayashi
The fieldbus is expected to be a common infrastructure of nextgeneration instrument and communication systems for plants. On the basis of experiences on the fiber-optic field instrument system FFI, Fuji Electric made a large contribution to the international standardization activity and put on the market the optical fieldbus system FFX in accordance with the international standard. This paper describes actual examples of the optical fieldbus systems FFI and FFX.

Engineering Support Tool to Improve Productivity and Quality
Minoru Yoshino, Sumio Kitamura, Akihiro Fujisawa
Fuji Electric has developed the high-efficiency engineering tool HEART series. The HEART series uses the office automation software Excel and Visio and has both functions of a drawing up tool for specifications and a programming support tool for distributed control systems (DCSs) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Using this tool, application control software for DCSs and PLCs is automatically drawn up from control specifications such as a sequential function chart, a time chart, a condition table, and an instrumentation flow diagram. Also monitoring on the specification is possible with a controller connected.

Total Production Management System for a Beer Plant Built with Multi-Vendor Products
Toshiaki Suganuma, Minoru Yoshino, Hideaki Fujiwara
The food industry has come to require efficient, stable production equipment for production systems, measures for hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) for safe food production, and supply chain management (SCM) to totally optimize procurement, production, distribution and sales. This paper describes the system for the beer plant of Sapporo Breweries, Ltd. as an example and outline of a total production management system. This is a top-class personal computer system in Japan which can execute such large-scale, advanced processing that was so far executed only with the distributed control system of an exclusive machine.

Environmental Management Systems Based on ISO14001
Shoichi Matsumoto, Masafumi Nakagawa, Daisuke Watanabe
It is an urgent subject for enterprises to maintain or improve environment. Fuji Electric developed environmental management systems Eco_MEISTER based on ISO14001 and systematized the product menu. This paper describes an outline of the systems and the contents of each package. Also citing the system supplied to a pharmaceutical company as an example, it describes an outline of the system, the introduction of the environmental document management system, and the environment monitoring system.

Replaceable Distributed Control System for Steel Works
Hideki Yoshioka
The steel industry in and outside the country is continuously replacing obsolete control equipment. However, because of deflationary spiral these days, the equipment investment in Japan is reduced or divided, and the budget scale steadily decreases. This paper describes the features of the control system of steel works, the form of equipment investment, the form of replacement for various control systems of instrument panels to old distributed control systems (DCSs), various methods of transmission to and from other equipment, and improvement in the DCS function of existing systems using personal computers, quoting actual examples.

High-Reliability Airport Refueling Instrument System
Takeshi Ikariya, Yasuyuki Kamiya
Incheon International Airport, Korea, was opened on March 29, 2001, to meet the flight demand increasing every year and the 2002 World cup. In the refueling facility of such a large airport, the control system is also required to have advanced function and high reliability to refuel many airplanes safely and surely. Since this airport can operate 24 hours, the instrument system is also required to be able to operate 24 hours throughout the year. This paper describes an outline of this airport, the configuration of the refueling instrument and control system, and an outline of the functions.

MES Solution for High Quality and Energy Reduction in Film Plants
Nakamasa Satou, Takashi Mikuriya, Shouji Tuudou
In the photographic film industry, higher quality photo characteristics, higher sensitivity, and lower prices have been required more severely, while sharp energy reduction in the production process is required from aspects of global warming prevention and cost. Under these circumstances, we have structured a temperature and humidity control system for the air conditioning process that uses optimum control by means of the model reference system in the photographic film production process, particularly in the drying process. This paper describes the MES (manufacturing execution system) solution to realize high quality and energy reduction.

High-Reliability Monitoring and Control System for Energy Plants
Shigemi Wakasugi, Shuji Ozawa
Since energy plants have close connections with current social activities, high reliability is strongly required of their control systems. On the other hand, cost reduction in construction and operation is required; moreover, with the progress in information technology, there is a demand for open systems. Fuji Electric has realized a high-reliabil-ity, high-cost-performance system by combining the ideas of high reliability cultivated during the past construction of energy plants with the advanced open process automation system MICREX-AX that incorporates the latest computer and communication technologies.
