Achieving Industry-Leading Low Loss,
Expanding the Discrete IGBT XS Series Lineup

Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan; led by President Michihiro Kitazawa) is pleased to announce the addition of a 1,200V-rated product to its discrete IGBT*1 XS Series lineup, providing industry-leading low loss.

1. Background

As the world moves closer to achieving a decarbonized society, there are expectations for further energy saving in social and industrial infrastructure facilities. Power semiconductors are key devices for power conversion and control in power electronics equipment*2 such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), power conditioning systems (PCS), and electric vehicle (EV) chargers. UPSs are essential for the stable operation of data centers, which are seeing expanding investment due to the digital revolution, while PCSs are essential for renewable energy power generation facilities and EV chargers support the EV charging infrastructure. The role of power semiconductors is to perform switching (turning electricity on and off) in circuits in repeated short increments to control the voltage and to switch between DC and AC.

Fuji Electric’s discrete IGBT XS Series reduces power loss both during switching (switching loss) and as electricity flows in the circuit (steady-state loss), helping to save power in the products in which they are equipped. In addition to the existing 650V-rated products, the company has begun selling a new 1,200V-rated product to accommodate devices with a wide range of capacity bands, including UPSs of several dozen kVA. They hope that the expanded lineup will contribute to the design of customer equipment. The market for industrial equipment outfitted with these products is expected to grow from the current 60 billion yen to 70 billion yen in 2023,*3 and to expand globally, particularly in China and Taiwan, where demand is strong.

2. Main Applications and Roles of the XS Series

Main applications Main roles
UPS Converts commercial power (AC power) to the DC power needed to charge UPS batteries. In emergencies, also converts the DC power charged in a battery into AC power, which can be used in factories and other facilities.
PCS Converts the DC power generated by solar panels into AC power (commercial power), which can flow over transmission lines.
Electric vehicle charger Converts commercial power (AC power) to the DC power needed to charge EV batteries.

3. Product Features

Simultaneously reduces steady-state loss and switching loss

This XS Series is equipped with the latest 7th-generation IGBT that boasts some of the best low-loss performance in the industry. The trade-off between steady-state loss and switching loss has been improved by optimizing the chip structure and reducing the thickness of the Si (silicon) substrate. Steady-state loss and switching loss are reduced by about 20% and about 6%, respectively, compared with the company’s conventional product. This means that FE has achieved industry-leading low loss, contributing to energy saving and power cost reduction of installed equipment.
