News Release
Release of Industry-smallest “Large Capacity UPS System using Lithium Ion Battery”

April 3,2018
Fuji Electric Co., Ltd.

Tokyo, April 3, 2018 - Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6504) (“FE”), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, led by President Michihiro Kitazawa, is pleased to announce that the release of the industry’s smallest “large capacity uninterruptible power supply system (hereafter, “UPS system”) using a lithium ion battery (hereafter, “LiB”).”

1.Background

The data center market has continued to grow in recent years along with increased data volumes due to the adoption of AI and IoT and the spread of cloud computing, etc.
UPS systems with built-in batteries are essential products for data centers to support the stable operation of their facilities by ensuring continuous power supply even in the event of a power failure, etc.
One of the most urgent issues for operators of data centers is to secure space for servers, as data centers need to increase the number of servers to handle increased data volumes.
Fuji Electric has realized the industry’s smallest UPS system by using a high-performance LiB battery (Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.). This will contribute to mitigating space issues for data centers.

: When calculated as 1 USD = 105 yen.

2.Product Features

1)Reduces Battery Panel Floor Space to Create More Space for Installing Servers

The UPS system comprises a UPS main unit and a battery panel. A high energy density,*2 high rate discharge*3 LiB is used for the battery panel and by optimal arrangement of parts, the floor space of the battery panel is reduced by approx. 74% (a weight saving of approx. 82%).*4 This contributes to space-saving for server installation in data centers.

*2

: Large volume of energy is stored per unit volume.

*3

: Large current is discharged.

*4

: When compared with a conventional product with a lead-acid battery
(500 kVA).

2)No Battery Replacement, Reducing Life-Cycle Costs

Conventional lead-acid batteries have a lifespan of around 7 years, resulting in the need to replace the battery at least once during the period of using a UPS system, which has a design lifespan of 15 years. However, installation of a LiB (square CAN Type) featuring a 15-year lifespan eliminates the need for battery replacement and reduces the total life-cycle cost from purchase to disposal by around 20%.

3)Improved UPS System Safety by Continuous Battery Monitoring

A battery monitoring device is installed as standard for the continuous monitoring of battery voltage and ambient temperature. In addition, in terms of safety functions, each battery panel is equipped with its own circuit breaker so if a battery anomaly occurs, the power will automatically be cut off to protect the UPS system.
