Tokyo, April 17, 2017 - Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6504) (“FE”), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, led by President Michihiro Kitazawa, is pleased to announce that Aluminium Bahrain (hereinafter Alba), a state-run aluminum smelting company headquartered in Askar, the Kingdom of Bahrain, has ordered a Fuji Electric product called S-Former through Line EPCM contractor, Bechtel International, which will be the largest rectifier in the world.

1.Contract Details

Fuji Electric recently signed a lump-sum contract with Alba for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of six rectifiers. The total output of the rectifiers will be 1,354 MW, making them the largest in the world.
Alba currently runs an aluminum smelting plant with an annual production capacity of more than 970,000 metric tons, and is planning on boosting its capacity by starting up a new production line. The new line is scheduled to begin operations in January 2019, which will expand the production capacity of the aluminum refinery to 1.5 million tons—the largest of any single aluminum smelting plant in the world.
A demand for aluminum is on the rise for aluminum metal for usage in the construction of lightweight cars and aircraft, given the rising fuel costs and the need to restrict carbon dioxide emissions. Given these trends, Fuji Electric is aiming to increase orders for the substation equipment used in aluminum smelters—including rectifiers, transformers, and gas insulated switchgears (GIS).

2.Fuji Electric’s Large-Capacity Rectifiers (S-Former)

FE S-Former for Alba

Rectifiers are used to supply electricity to electrolyzing processes for nonferrous metals (such as aluminum, copper, and zinc), caustic soda, and other materials. Their function is to convert the AC power into DC power.
The Fuji Electric S-Former has already been delivered across the globe, and is currently in use in the Middle East, North America, Oceania, China, Asia, and Africa. The total delivered capacity have reached approximately 25,000 MW, representing the highest share of the world market at 40% (the contracted capacity for the last two years has reached a total output of around 1,700 MW equivalent to approximately 60% of the market share).
Fuji Electric delivered an S-Former and GIS equipment to Alba in 2004 as well.
