Tokyo, November 05, 2012 - Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6504) announced today that it jointly with Sumitomo Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and NTT Communications Corporation, has been commissioned by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to implement a new NEDO Smart Community Demonstration Project in an industrial park on the Indonesian island of Java.
The demonstration project was adopted based on the results of two earlier projects commissioned by NEDO: a technical feasibility study on developing a smart community in an industrial park on Indonesia's main island in fiscal year 2010, and an FS project in fiscal year 2011. The demonstration project will run for about three years, ending in February 2016.
With growing domestic demand boosting continued economic growth, energy consumption in Indonesia is increasing at a significant rate. Power shortages remain a concern, however, due to planning delays affecting a number of ongoing large-scale power station construction projects. Factories, for example, are suffering badly from deteriorating power quality primarily due to outages and voltage drops, which are caused by a lack of surplus power or insufficient maintenance of power transmission and transformation systems. Stable supply and improved quality of electricity is an issue that must therefore be addressed for the future development of industrial parks in Indonesia. This project, which will take place in the Suryacipta City of Industry industrial park located in the suburbs of Jakarta, will demonstrate the effects of smart community technologies designed to solve the power supply issue, thereby verifying their value when widely implemented. On October 8, 2012, at the fourth Indonesia-Japan Joint Economic Forum held in Tokyo, the governments of Japan and Indonesia agreed to accelerate efforts to start this demonstration project as quickly as possible.
The smart community technologies introduced by the demonstration project will focus on the three areas listed below:
(1) Technology for stabilizing electricity quality (by Fuji Electric)
A distribution automation system and equipment for stabilizing voltage will be introduced to verify their effects in terms of reducing outage duration and stabilizing voltage, among others. Additionally, a high-quality power supply system with large-capacity UPS*1 will be introduced to verify its effects in reducing damage caused by outages, momentary voltage drops, etc.
(2) Energy conservation using an energy management system (by Mitsubishi Electric and Fuji Electric)
An ICT*2-based DSM*3 system for dynamic control will be introduced to verify its effect in controlling electricity demand. At the same time, a FEMS*4 will be introduced to verify its effectiveness as a tool to support the demand side in controlling demand requested by the DSM and facilitating energy conservation.
(3) An ICT platform that serves as infrastructure for (1) and (2) above (by NTT Communications)
A high-quality communication infrastructure and cloud platform will be established.
