Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (FE) is pleased to announce that it plans to reorganize its production system for transmission and distribution equipment and to make capital investments to expand its production capacity.
Transmission and distribution equipment is essential to providing a stable supply of electricity, and demand for such equipment is rising rapidly against the backdrop of the expansion of renewable energy, increased construction of data centers (IDCs) and semiconductor factories associated with the spread of generative AI, and the replacement of equipment delivered during Japan’s period of high economic growth.
FE currently manufactures transformers, switchgear, and other transmission and distribution equipment at its Chiba Factory (Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture), but its production capacity is expected to fall short given the increased sales volume, so the company will transfer the production of switchgear to its Kawasaki Factory (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture) and make capital investments to expand production capacity for transmission and distribution equipment at both factories.
FE’s plan is to begin production of switchgear at the Kawasaki Factory in the first half of FY2026 and increase production of transformers at the Chiba Factory in the second half of FY2026, ultimately increasing the production capacity of both switchgear and transformers to 1.5 times the current level. At the same time, the company will also expand standardized design and automated production in order to further improve productivity and shorten production lead-times.
The Kawasaki Factory is primarily a production base for power generation equipment like generators and steam turbines, and it also has the technologies necessary for the production of switchgear, such as can welding and machine processing. It is also suited for the marine transportation of large products because it is located on the coast.
Demand for energy is expanding worldwide. To improve its manufacturing competitiveness on a global scale, FE will promote the building of an optimal production system that includes, in addition to these two factories, its Kobe and Tsukuba Factories, which manufacture switchboards and power supplies, as well as its factories in Singapore (Fuji SMBE Pte. Ltd.) and Thailand (Fuji Electric Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Fuji Tusco Co., Ltd.).
