Recycling of Resources

The careful use of limited resources is considered an important step toward realizing a resource-recycling-based society.

Fuji Electric promotes zero waste and effective use of water resources.

Reducing Waste

In Japan, Fuji Electric promotes recycling to attain the goal of zero waste, which means bringing landfill-bound waste down to 1% or less of the total. Since reaching this goal of zero waste in Japan in fiscal 2004, we have surpassed our targets each year.

Total waste generated in Japan in FY2010 was 19,693 tons, roughly unchanged from last year, with waste destined for landfills up about one ton, to 40 tons. This was due to damage sustained in the Great East Japan Earthquake by the recycling plant that handles Fuji Electric’s waste, making the shipping of 8.9 tons to the landfill unavoidable. The landfill ratio was kept to 0.2%, maintaining the same level as last year.

We aim to maintain this zero waste ratio, as we strive to help create a resource-recycling-based society.

Efficient Use of Water Resources

Water resources are an essential part of a resource-recycling-based economic system. Along with the saving of species, the preservation of water resources was one of the important issues raised in the biodiversity convention.

Fuji Electric is working to preserve aquatic environments based on our Biodiversity Guideline. We aim to reduce our water consumption, lower wastewater emissions and step up our efforts to manage the quality of these emissions.

We set specific water usage targets in Japan for all of our production bases in FY2010. Total water usage volume was 6,832,000 tons, and wastewater emissions came to 5,612,000 tons, roughly the same as last year. This is because our product volume exceeded our conservation efforts.

In addition to these efforts, we will augment efforts toward effective water use in Shenzhen, China, and other regions at risk of water resource depletion.
