Environmental Report : Reduction Activities : Resource Conservation

The realization of a recycling-oriented society requires that companies make efforts to cut emissions of wastes and wastewater. An additional imperative is to reduce the environmental impact of products over entire life cycles, including stages such as design, procurement, shipping and distribution, usage and disposal. The Fuji Electric Group is promoting the development of more eco-friendly products by switching to more easily recyclable materials and by revising structural designs to make products easier to disassemble for recycling purposes.

The Fuji Electric Group has been promoting internal adoption of the 3R philosophy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) for some years as part of efforts to achieve the goal of zero waste emissions (defined as a ratio of waste sent to landfill to total waste emissions of 1% or less) by the end of March 2006. Total waste emissions in fiscal 2005 equaled 27,219 tons, which was a similar figure to the previous year. Landfill waste totaled 149 tons. The final disposal ratio was 0.5%, an improvement on the previous year's figure of 0.8%.

This marked the second consecutive year that the Group achieved zero waste emissions. Going forward, the Group aims to maintain this record while seeking to reduce total waste emissions in absolute terms. This will involve efforts to restrict and reduce waste, and to expand recycling initiatives.

The Saitama Plant of Fuji Electric Retail Systems has switched to using paint for its vending machines that is 100% recyclable. The key components in this new paint have been integrated into a single powder. After collection, this powder can be reconstituted from post-use vending machines provided that checks confirm that the components have not undergone any degradation.

The firm is also reusing waste cardboard within the plant to make shock-absorbing panels for packing materials, and supplying recycled waste plastics to China. Other efforts targeting zero-waste status include improvements to restrict waste by raising yields in steel-pressing processes.

In recognition of these various achievements, the site received the chairman's award in fiscal 2005 from a Japanese association that promotes the 3Rs

Water

Maintaining the stability and quality of water supplies are critical aspects of building a recycling-oriented society. Conservation and recycling measures are also required in Japan, where fresh water is plentiful. The Fuji Electric Group regards water usage and the strengthening of controls to cut wastewater and manage the quality of emissions as important management issues.
