![]() In line with targets set by the Japanese electronics industry, the Fuji Electric Group aims to reduce CO2 emissions per unit of production by at least 1% per year relative to levels in the benchmark year of fiscal 1997. During fiscal 2005, CO2 emissions remained at an appreciable level due to the high output of the Group's semiconductor plants, although emissions did improve per unit of production. Plans call for gains from energy conversion programs, including the introduction of more cogeneration systems. The Group is also focusing on cutting emissions in distribution functions, in line with the legal obligations of shippers introduced as a result of revisions to Japan's Energy Conservation Law. Greenhouse gas emissions (excluding CO2)
GWP (global warming potential) measures the relative greenhouse effect caused by a gas compared with CO2, which is assigned a GWP value of 1.

The Fuji Electric Group is an active participant in the official energysaving program promoted by the Japanese government to achieve a 6% cut in national CO2 emissions as part of efforts to prevent global warming. Group employees joined in the national "Cool Biz" campaign in the summer of 2005, which involved setting the thermostats on office air-conditioning systems to 28 Lower air-conditioning costs using heat-insulating paintShinshu Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., which manufactures and services currency handling equipment, has tried to boost the efficiency of its power usage by applying 20 years of historical data on power consumption by function and area to forecast average and peak power demand at its facilities over time. Other measures to boost energy efficiency have included applying heat-insulating paint to the outer surfaces of iron doors at the firm's plant to save energy in summer. The savings achieved through this program have been re-invested in solar and wind power generation equipment to supply power for the lighting in the company car park and notice boards.
