Open Drive Control Systems
Eiji Nishimura, Kaoru Takahashi, Toshihiro Jin
The prices of recent motor drive and control systems for industrial plants have been lowered by the multi-vender environment and general-purpose hardware. Open and distributed systems are earnestly desired even in the drive control systems that require high reliability and speed. This paper gives an outline of the drive system and programmable controller that meet the open bus and the intelligent drive system that has a master control function in the drive system with the aim of distributing systems, citing application examples.

Variable-Speed Drive Systems for Industrial Plants
Kohji Saigoh
Variable-speed drive systems for industrial plants have various output capacities ranging from several kVA to ten odd MVA and have to meet various requirements for control methods, speed matching performance, and speed/torque control precision. This paper outlines the line-up of Fuji Electric's variable drive systems, IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) inverters, thyristor Leonard systems, the connection of variable-speed drive systems and programmable con-trollers, and their maintenance/monitoring systems.

General-Purpose Vector Control Inverters
Hiroshi Tetsutani, Naoki Kanazawa, Yoshikazu Ichinaka
There are growing requirements of variable-speed-use inverters in various industrial machines for high performance, multiple functions, and compatibility with systems, and further, for improvements in inverter serviceability such as maneuverability, protective/maintenance functions, conformity to world standards, and synchronous motor drive. To meet the situation, Fuji Electric has marketed the new vector control inverter "FRENIC5000VG7S" which has been greatly improved in performance and functions, replete with the technology card capable of installing user programs and the interface with the upper-level controller.

Variable-Speed Drive Systems for Energy Conservation
Masahiro Hoshi, Masashi Kawano, Masafumi Mokutani
Energy conservation is one of the important themes of environmental preservation. Japan amended the Energy Conservation Law in order to achieve the target of reduction in the total greenhouse gas discharge. Fuji Electric was in the business of energy conservation before the first oil crisis and has supplied equipment for energy conservation. This paper describes permanent-magnet motors and high-voltage inverters as drive systems for energy conservation equipment. Also it introduces examples of energy conservation using these drive systems.

New Drive Control Technologies for Industrial Plants
Tsutomu Miyashita Hideyuki Nishida Shinichi Ito
Fuji Electric has been promoting many studies, developments, and practical uses of advanced control applications. From among these, this paper describes the following technologies: tuningless control that requires no local tuning by using a disturbance observer and examples of application to motor speed control and current control; auto-tuning for motor speed control using simple adaptive control currently under development and the test result; and vibration suppression control of a two-mass system taking the response of a torque control system into consideration and the test result.

Engineering Support Systems for Industrial Plants
Yoshiki Tanaka, Shigeyuki Nemoto, Satoru Watanabe
To improve the efficiency of the integrated engineering support system which performs the centralized management of various data produced in the engineering process of systems with motor applications and efficiently designs software for the programmable controller (PLC), Fuji Electric has added the following support functions: Support for linking operation plan and software Support for effectively linking engineering data and general-purpose tools Support for replacing the existing PLC. This paper describes these added functions.

Variable-Speed Drive and Control Systems for Rolling Mills
Takao Kasai, Tsutomu Tochigi
The drive systems of large rolling mills is of a cycloconverter type, a GTO (gate turn-off thyristor) type or high-voltage IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) type. Drive systems for bar, rod and pipe mills use three and/or two level IGBT inverters. This paper describes recent technical trends of drives and control systems in rolling mills, including each drive application and the PLC (programmable controller) and HCI (human communication interface) controlling the total rolling mill line.

Drive Control Systems for Processing Lines
Kohji Saigoh, Yoshiki Tanaka
The drive control systems for processing lines requires high-precision control for speed matching, tension, and load balance to operate many motors while giving proper speed and tension to the conveyed steel plate. This paper describes the system construction of the latest process lines, the function of the MFC (mid field controller), and the features of control technologies such as tension control in the furnace and auto-tuning for the speed of motors.
