Fuji Electric Co., Ltd.

Tokyo, December 24, 2013 - Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6504) ("FE"), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, led by President, Michihiro Kitazawa, is pleased to announce that it has received order with NBK CORPORATION, headquartered in Tokyo, an order for a new micro-grid system. This system is intended for "The Project for Introduction of a Micro-Grid System with Renewable Energy for the Tonga Energy Road Map under the Grant Aid," from Tonga Power Limited.
It is the first export of a micro-grid system to be made under the Japanese government grant aid to a foreign country.

1. Outline

(1) Description of order received

  • Micro-grid system and photovoltaic (PV) power generation system with a capacity of 1 MW

  • Full-turnkey order including on-site works (package order)

(2) Destination

Tongatapu Island, the Kingdom of Tonga

(3) Scheduled completion

 March 2015 (plan)

The Kingdom of Tonga has formulated the Tonga Energy Road Map (TERM) 2010 - 2020 aimed at covering 50% of energy supply with renewable energy by 2020 in order to address two themes: reduction of greenhouse gases and stable securement of energy.
The implementation of this project including the delivery of a micro-grid system and a 1 MW PV power generation system to Tongatapu Island is expected to contribute to the achievement of the energy road map of Tonga by realizing stable energy supply and minimizing frequency fluctuations in the power system of the Island.

2. Micro-grid system of Fuji Electric

Fuji Electric has aimed to be a leading-edge company in the smart community and worked on many verification projects including micro-grid systems for isolated islands in the Kyushu-Okinawa area up to now. These achievements have led to the establishment of technologies of our community energy management system (CEMS) and smart energy storage system, which we offer to ensure the power demand and supply balance and power quality (voltage/frequency) of an entire community.

Micro-grid system
Introduction of a large number of power generation facilities driven by natural energy, which involves output fluctuation, makes it difficult to stably supply energy and maintain power quality due to fluctuations in the frequency of the power system. A micro-grid system allows large-scale introduction by high-speed charging/discharging control of the power storage device according to the state of the power system for reducing the output fluctuation of unstable renewable energy to maintain the power quality.

Fuji Electric intends to continue actively introducing this system in Japan and overseas based on its abundant past results and experience.
