Equipment Order Received from the U.S. for One of the Largest Biomass Power Plants

Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., announces today that has accepted an order for biomass power-generating equipment to be installed in a power plant in Berlin, New Hampshire, USA from Babcock & Wilcox Construction Co., Inc. (BWCC).
1. Overview of business deal
The order is for biomass power-generating equipment with a generating-end output of 75 MW, making the plant the largest in the northeast of the U.S.
Fuji Electric has been contracted to manufacture, install, and perform test runs on a 75 MW steam turbine and an 85 MVA generator. The generating equipment will be delivered using the skid method,* greatly shortening on-site construction time.
The plant is expected to be completed in September 2013 and will supply power to the city of Berlin, New Hampshire through the Public Service of New Hampshire, which is the local electric utility.

Skid method:
A method of packaging the steam turbine and generator on a single bed. Shipping, transporting, and installing the equipment as a package eliminates the need for on-site assembly, which contributes greatly to shortening on-site construction time.
2. Expansion of Fuji Electric’s power plant business in North America
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, enacted in 2009, has made biomass power generation eligible for tax breaks as a renewable energy source.
It is expected that this law will lead to the further construction of biomass power plants in the future as an excellent power generation method in terms of protection of the global environment, as it does not cause an increase in atmospheric CO2.
Fuji Electric regards North America as one of the important regions for its power plant business. The Company plans to develop the business aggressively, including geothermal and thermal power generation, in addition to biomass power generation.
