High-Efficient Front-End Power Supply for Servers

Fuji Electric Hi-Tech Corp. (President and Representative Director: Shinji Arai; hereinafter referred to as “Hi-Tech”) announced today that it has obtained 80 PLUS Gold certification, which is a certification system for high-efficiency power supplies, of its FH2000U1, a new switching power supply for high-end servers at data centers. Sales commence from November 1, 2009.

The new product is a front-end power supply for plus 12-volt servers, and its efficiency with a 50% load is 92.9%. Hi-Tech is the first power supply manufacturer in Japan to acquire 80 PLUS Gold certification of a standard front-end power supply.

High-Tech achieved high efficiency for this product by using new parts such as silicon carbide (SiC) diodes and low on-state resistance elements, and by creating the Company’s own circuit technology. By reducing the size of cooling fins for heating and devising packing technology, the Company achieved a significant reduction to 1.3W/CC and high power density窶髏€2.6 times that of its previous model.

With the worldwide effort to reduce the power consumption of data centers, it is becoming increasingly important to further improve the efficiency of front-end power supplies for the core voltage in servers. Based on this new product, High-Tech will enhance its capacity in digital control equipment, and develop high-efficient front-end power supplies, such as plus 12-volt output products and plus 48-volt output rack-mounted 1U products, with the aim to acquire the highest level of 80 PLUS Platinum certification. In addition, the Company will expand sales to information and telecommunications equipment manufacturers on a global scale.

80 PLUS GOLD

80 PLUS is a certification program for power supplies managed by Ecos Consulting, an environmental consulting company in the United States. Ecos Consulting measures the efficiency of power supply units for computers and servers, and grants permission to attach labels on high-efficient products. Power supplies are divided into two classes: units for PCs and workstations, and units for servers at data centers. Ecos Consulting awards certification for products that meet specified levels of efficiency. Four levels are awarded for power supply units for servers at data centers: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Currently, the highest level for registered certified power supplies is gold.
