Fuji Electric Systems to Increase Production Capacity for
Film-Type Amorphous Solar Cells
Fuji Electric Systems Co., Ltd. (FES) (head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Ginjiro Yanai) has announced today that it will invest ¥7 billion to reinforce its production capacity for “F WAVE”, a film-type amorphous solar cell, from current level of 12MW per year to 40 MW in the first half of fiscal 2008.
Background
Solar cell market is growing significantly centered on Europe in recent years, with total global production capacity of approximately 1.2 GW in 2004, 1.8 GW in 2005 and 2.5 GW in 2006. The market is expected to continue to expand mainly in Europe at an annual growth rate of approximately 30% and double the production capacity to approximately 5.2 GW. Against this backdrop, being approached by many customers in Germany and other European countries, FES has decided to increase its production capacity.
Production Capacity Enhancement Plan
FES will add two production lines at its Kumamoto plant by investing approximately ¥7 billion between fiscal 2007 and 2008 to boost its annual production output to 40 MW in 2009. Demand for solar cells is expected to further increase not only in Europe but also in Japan, rest of Asia and United States. By closely watching market and technology trends, FES will pump approximately ¥30 billion into its R&D operations and enhancement of plants and equipment, aiming for an annual production capacity of 150 MW. FES will also consider expanding its module production base to somewhere in Europe closer to the market region or in China

Features of F WAVE
"F WAVE", a film-type amorphous solar cell, has the following features not seen in other companies' solar cells:
- Save on as many silicon materials as possible
- Lightweight, thin and flexible
- Capable of generating electricity with very small amount of light
- Environmentally-friendly employing a production method that allows for cutting CO2 emissions by 50% compared to crystalline solar cells
Making maximum use of these features, FES is marketing F WAVE primarily for building rooftop use such as those for large rooftop areas and waterproof-sheet integrated types. FES will strive to significantly reduce cost through mass production using its proprietary and highly productive "roll-to-roll process" while further focusing on development of new products by fully applying the lightweight and flexible feature
