Reducing Waste in Business Activities

ESG

In accordance with its Basic Environmental Protection Policy and Environmental Vision 2050, Fuji Electric is promoting the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) across the supply chain in order to contribute to the realization of a recycling-oriented society. Waste reduction initiatives are one facet of this undertaking.

Reducing Waste in Business Activities

We are working to reduce the total amount of waste in production activities by making products smaller and lighter and taking measures to reduce defects at the manufacturing stage. Furthermore, we aim to reduce the amount of landfill waste by recycling the waste we generate. As an indicator of the effectiveness of our activities, we set an annual target for the final disposal rate (amount of landfill waste/total amount of waste) and are working to improve our performance.

In Japan, we have maintained a final disposal rate of less than 1% since fiscal 2004. In fiscal 2022, we set a final disposal rate target of 0.5% in Japan, and achieved a result of 0.13%.

In contrast, we confirmed that the final disposal volume overseas varies from year to year, and we have identified this as an issue that needs to be resolved. In fiscal 2021, the overseas final disposal rate declined to 7.6%, but fiscal in 2022, thanks to the Malaysia Factory’s ability to recycle inorganic sludge, which had been disposed of in landfills the previous year, we were able to significantly improve the overseas final disposal rate to 1.7%.

As a result, our company-wide final disposal rate for fiscal 2022 was 0.50%, achieving our target value of 1.2% or less.

In fiscal 2023, we aim to achieve a company-wide final disposal rate of 1% or less.

Compliance with the New Plastics Law

In April 2022, the New Plastics Law (i.e., the Plastic Resource Circulation Act) came into effect in Japan. The purpose of the law is to promote the recycling of resources throughout the distribution channels of plastics, from product design to waste disposal. Accordingly, we have recognized the importance of expanding our waste plastic management and reduction activities not only in production processes, but throughout the entire supply chain. Therefore, we have begun identifying emissions in non-production activities and are examining methods to improve recycling.
