All chemical substances have certain excellent properties. At the same time, however, if misused they can harm people’s health and have negative effects on the environment.
Fuji Electric manages chemical substances appropriately and works to reduce their emissions.
Fuji Electric set its reduction targets at 40% from fiscal FY2000 levels by FY2010. These cover emissions of chemical Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) Law-listed substances and for atmospheric emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in accordance with the voluntary action plan created by four electronics and electrical industry organizations based on the Air Pollution Control Act. Emissions of PRTR-listed substances in FY2010 were 219.1 tons, down 40.4% compared with FY2000, and atmospheric emissions of VOCs totaling 286.1 tons, a reduction of 62.2%. Therefore, we achieved both targets.
These reductions are mainly the result of eliminating manufacturing and production issues by switching to substitute chemicals, as well as to overcoming quality issues following this switch. The efficacy of our environmental investment up to now has also been steadily reflected in this achievement.
We plan to set new targets and plans from FY2011 on in accordance with the directives of the relevant governmental authorities and the efforts of the four electronics and electrical industry organizations. In the interim, we will maintain the FY2010 targets (reduction of 40% in comparison with FY2000), and seek further reductions by restructuring our bases and updating facilities to boost production efficiency.
Information on atmospheric emissions of VOCs is reported in the Voluntary Action Plan by the Electronics and Electrical Industries Regarding Volatile Organic Compounds.
