Environmental Report : Targets and Results : Performance Status (Fiscal 2005) and New Mid-term Plan

The Fuji Electric Group has compiled a new mid-term plan (covering the period fiscal 2006-2008) containing measures to promote the realization of a society based on sustainable development. This plan formulates environmental management policies for reducing environmental burden through the products, technologies and services supplied by the Group over the next three years, based on the vision for 2010. Efforts are now focused on full implementation of this plan.

New Mid-term Plan

Environmental Management Certification (ISO)

The Suzuka Plant was the first Fuji Electric Group site to complete independent certification procedures for environmental management systems, to the BS7750* standard in 1995. All Group manufacturing sites and consolidated subsidiaries in Japan have since acquired ISO 14001 certification, and overseas manufacturing subsidiaries are currently working toward this same goal. In Japan, the Group is expanding environmental activity programs to all operations, including sales and office-based functions as well as manufacturing sites.

* BS7750 is a U.K. quality standard created by the British Standards Institution on which the ISO 14000 series of standards was based.

Initiatives at Fuji Electric Holdings

The holding company and a number of administrative service subsidiaries based at the Osaki site in Tokyo completed ISO certification procedures in October 2005. Besides programs to reduce consumption of paper and electricity and cut amounts of waste produced, all functionas were required to construct original frameworks to take into account the environmental and social impact of existing operational processes. This exercise was designed to raise the environmental awareness of employees.

Initiatives within sales functions

The head office, branch offices, sales offices and consolidated sales subsidiaries of Fuji Electric FA Components & Systems have all gained ISO 14001 certification. Within sales functions, one of the themes of ISO-based environmental management is helping customers to reduce environmental impact in conjunction with the Group by promoting eco-friendly products with energy-saving and other benefits.

Initiatives at Overseas Sites

Fuji Electric Device Technology conducts annual environmental audits to assess the environmental protection/conservation and legal/regulatory compliance status of production sites in Malaysia, the Philippines, China and the U.K. Each of these sites gained ISO 14001 certification up to two years ago, and are currently at the stage of formulating and implementing environmental management plans on their own initiative. The senior managers with designated responsibility for environmental matters at Fuji Electric Group production subsidiaries outside Japan are generally the presidents of these operations. Their job is to lead the site workforce in implementing programs to reduce power and fuel consumption, wastes and emissions of harmful chemicals. Fuji Electric Philippines, Inc. renewed its Sony Green Partner certification in July 2005. In September 2005, the firm also began using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy in the management of materials containing harmful chemicals ahead of the RoHS directive coming into force in July 2006. The firm is actively trying to reduce waste emissions to prevent sending waste to landfill. These initiatives continue to contribute to higher environmental conservation awareness among company employees.
